WAYI TEMPORARY

‘Temporary’ is the second single from WAYI's soul-R&B project which reads like lovesick diary entries. Speaking about the sophomore release, the Belgian-Congolese singer and songwriter puts forward her thoughts: “Everyone must have had a broken heart once in a lifetime. After you "heal" from it, you realise that life is too short; that there is actually worse things happening in the world and that you shouldn’t be crying over that person. Still... at times, you find yourself struggling between letting go and being jealous that he has moved on with someone else.” It’s this sense of moving on that comes to play in ‘Temporary’, which very much deals with the impermanence of every situation. Through the glitchy, R&B electronica and Africana rhythms, WAYI gently delivers the hard truth that 'we do not get to keep everything, / It’s temporary, / We all love someday, / We all lose someday'. While there are points you’d wish WAYI would rip through the languid melodies to show off the vocal prowess we’re sure she has; this is still essential wisdom in the framework of ‘00s R&B but reworked with this 25-year-old Congolese flair. As summer comes to a close, it won’t be long until WAYI’s Love in Progress EP makes an appearance. - Hannah Thacker
